Mr. Grimsley is the most well-suited, impressive Wotan I have heard in many years. His instrument is large along with plenty of overtone. The timbre is also well-suited to the material. With respect to comments about a wobble in the voice, I would point out that opera is the NFL of singing, none more than Wagner. The singer has to constantly produce enough sound with enough ring to cut through a large orchestra, often in enormous halls. Mr. Grimsley has done this for decades in a world-class manner. No singer does this kind of vocalization for a career without some manifestation of the work they’ve done. I challenge anyone to name a sixty-something Wotan who doesn’t have a wobble or some diminution in quality or range or power. I’d say Mr. Grimsley has done very well.
